Introduction: The Importance of Communication in Dementia Care
Communication is fundamental to human connection, dignity, and care. For individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, communication becomes increasingly challenging as cognitive abilities decline. These challenges affect not only the person’s ability to express needs, thoughts, and feelings but also their capacity to understand others. For healthcare professionals, particularly nurses working in dementia care settings, developing effective communication strategies is essential for providing quality care, maintaining the person’s dignity, and enhancing quality of life.
Research consistently demonstrates that appropriate communication techniques can reduce responsive behaviors (sometimes referred to as “challenging behaviors”), improve mood, and enhance overall wellbeing in people with dementia (Vasse et al. 890). Moreover, effective communication strengthens the relationship between the care provider and the person with dementia, creating a foundation of trust that supports all aspects of care.
This chapter explores evidence-based approaches to communicating and connecting with individuals with dementia, emphasizing person-centered care principles and practical strategies that nurses can implement across care settings and stages of dementia.
